Many of the rides described in our New England bicycling book come in pairs, teasing you with a two-day adventure to a new or old-favorite part of New England. I had my eye on a couple rides in northern New Hampshire and convinced my friend Nancy to join me.
We camped in a National Forest campground near the town of Twin Lakes. I love camping, especially when it comes with a mountain stream at no extra cost. But if you are looking for a more luxurious end to your bicycling day, I highly recommend the historic
Mt. Washington Hotel, just down the road.
The first day, September 1, we drove to our campsite, set up camp, and then cycled about 40 miles starting from the campground around 11:00.

We ate lunch on the town green in Whitefield. |
In all my travels through New England,
this was my first village gun store (in Whitefield).
We always had views of the mountains
but the riding was never difficult. |
After the first day's riding we relaxed at our spacious campsite. |
This swimming hole was a short walk through the woods from our campsite.
This beats a shower any day. |
The second day, after breaking camp we drove to Whitefield where we started a 64-mile loop.
The day's ride featured several covered bridges. |
We passed one bucolic farm after another... |
And the occasional fixer-upper. |
St. Timothy's Church in the town of Lost Nation. A number of the towns we passed through had only a church or...nothing. |
We finished the second day's ride by crossing the Connecticut River and riding in
Vermont for several miles. |
The Connecticut River |
Vermont cornfields |
We rode about 40 miles the first day. . |
We started our second day's 64 mile ride from the town of Whitefield.
